Windows for Waships?!

February 28th, 2007, 16:46

Apparently the latest and advanced Type 45 destroyers, now being launched by the Royal Navy will run Windows for Warships, a modified version of Windows 2000 designed to run on navy vessels. Are they insane? Why would you want to run an Operating System, designed primarily for ease of use and the consumer market, on a £1 billion destroyer?

Apparently the British submarine fleet will also be ‘retrofitted with Microsoft-based command systems’. One class of these submarines (Vanguard class) carry the UK’s nuclear weapons and are armed with Trident ICBMs, tipped with multiple H-bomb warheads.

Maybe this gives a whole new meaning to the ‘Blue screen of death’?

are you sure it’s not ‘Warships for Windows’, a naval alternative to Solitaire?
