I’ve just come from an article on dilbertblog.com, exploring the shift in the perception of atheists by religious groups. I have to wonder why many religious people would believe that an aetheist is less human? Is it that an aetheist clearly can’t have morals (or morals as good as a religious person) as they have no code to follow? If someone believes that then wouldn’t that indicate that the only thing determining their morality is their belief in god and the fact that they’ll go to hell if they break that moral code? Wouldn’t that mean an aetheist has a better moral code as what they choose to do is really their decision and not born out of fear?
Lots of questions, but mostly I’m annoyed with religion. It just seems to me that often it’s religious people who miss the point, who have the worse morals. Not that I should judge! Of course my opinion is adversely affected by the news, the bible bashers, etc; I know that most religious people are honest, hard working people.
Still, I think it’s time for me to speak out a little about my aetheist beliefs! You get religious leaflets and people knocking on the door preaching, so why not aetheists? Actually I think it’s good that aetheists don’t… I think it tells you something important about them - not that they don’t care, but that they think it’s probably best that you make the decision yourself. I mean, if you’re reading this, you’ve chosen to come here and you’re choosing to read. I haven’t come to you in any way and put this under your nose.
There’s a good movie here on youtube about the aetheist perspective that I think is worth watching. It doesn’t make any revolutionary points, but there’s a brilliant quote at the end which I’m going to include here. It made me think.
“It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.”
